George Lazenby takes over from Sean Connery in one of the best Bonds – despite its slightly wooden lead

| Mr and Mrs Bond |
There are two supposedly ‘crap’ Bonds: one is David Niven in Casino Royale, and the other is George Lazenby, who made his only appearance as 007 in this Swiss-set spy romp. But while Casino Royale is just a weird anomaly, OHMSS really has a lot more to offer than you’d think.
First up, of course, it features Diana Rigg. There aren’t many women out there who haven’t fantasised at some point in their life about being Ms Rigg, and there aren’t too many men who haven’t fantasised about being with her either, so she has the advantage of appealing to both sexes. Plus, she gets to wear fur hats, ice skate and become the only woman to marry Bond on screen. Not that she stays married to him for long though.
Then there’s the location. Switzerland, of course, makes an ideal setting for a Bond film, because there are plenty of mountains, ski slopes and finishing schools. That means good action scenes, both in cars and on skis, avalanches and plenty of nubile young women knocking about.
As for the plot, well, a man wants to take over the world. He’s called Blofeld, and this time round he’s played by Telly Savalas. His henchwoman is a terrifying lady called Irma Bunt (Isle Steppat), who gets the ultimate revenge on Bond at the end of the film. In the unlikely event you haven’t seen this one, we won’t give it away, but suffice to say it required George Lazenby to have a little more range than any other Bond.
Unfortunately, the former car salesman wasn’t really up to the job. He’s good in the action scenes, but less convincing when trying to persuade us he’s really falling in love with Tracy (Rigg). Mind you, she did chew garlic all through their love scenes. Still, don’t believe the doubters: this is top notch Bond entertainment, and certainly better than anything Roger Moore could pull off.

It’s a Bank Holiday, this is Bond – what else could you possibly watch? |
